How to Play Schafkopf

The goal of the game is to score more points than the opposing team by taking more valuable cards in tricks.

The Cards and Their Values

Schafkopf is played with a deck of 32 cards from a German or French suit system. The cards have eight ranks: Ace (A), Ten (10), King (K), Queen (Q), Jack (J), Nine (9), Eight (8), and Seven (7). The suits are Acorns (Eichel), Leaves (Gras), Hearts (Herz), and Bells (Schellen).

The cards have different values depending on whether they are trumps or not. Trumps are special cards that can beat any non-trump card in a trick. The trump suit varies depending on the game mode, but it always includes all four Jacks (Unters) and all four Queens (Obers). The trump suit ranks from highest to lowest as follows:

RankCardValue

1Jack of Acorns4

2 Jack of Leaves4

3Jack of Hearts4

4Jack of Bells4

5Queen of Acorns3

6Queen of Leaves3

7Queen of Hearts3

8Queen of Bells3

9-14The remaining cards of the trump suit, from Ace to Seven, in descending order.Ace=11, Ten=10, King=4, Nine=0, Eight=0, Seven=0.

Non-trumps (in descending order)

SuitCardValue

Acorns, Leaves, or Bells (depending on the game mode)Ace (Sau)11

Ten (Zehner)10

King (König)4

Nine (Neuner)0

Eight (Achter)0

Seven (Siebener)0

Note: The Jacks and Queens are always trumps and do not belong to their natural suits.

The total value of all cards in the deck is 120 points. A team needs at least 61 points to win a round, while the opposing team needs at least 60 points to win. If a team has less than 30 points, it is schneider (tailor), and if it has no points at all, it is schwarz (black). These conditions affect the game value and the scoring.

The Game Modes and Their Rules

Schafkopf has different game modes that determine the trump suit, the partnerships, and the game value. The game modes are either declared by the dealer or by the player who has the highest bid in the auction. The game modes are as follows:

  • Rufspiel (Call Game): This is the most common and basic game mode. The dealer or the highest bidder is the declarer and plays with a partner against the other two players. The declarer chooses a suit (Acorns, Leaves, or Bells) as the trump suit, in addition to the Jacks and Queens. The declarer also calls for an Ace (Sau) of a non-trump suit and plays with the owner of that card as a partner. The declarer and the partner must score at least 61 points to win.

  • Solo: This is a game mode where one player plays alone against the other three players. The soloist chooses a suit (Acorns, Leaves, Hearts, or Bells) as the trump suit, in addition to the Jacks and Queens. The soloist must score at least 61 points to win.

  • Wenz: This is a game mode where one player plays alone against the other three players. The only trumps are the four Jacks. The soloist must score at least 61 points to win.

  • Tout: This is a special game mode where one player plays alone against the other three players and announces that he or she will take all tricks, i.e., score 120 points. The soloist can choose any of the above game modes (Rufspiel, Solo, or Wenz) and declare Tout before the first card is played.

  • Sie: This is a very rare game mode where one player has all four Jacks in his or her hand. The player can declare Sie before the first card is played and win automatically.

The game modes have different values that affect the scoring. The values are as follows:

Game ModeValue

Rufspiel (Call Game)1 point

Solo with Acorns, Leaves, or Bells as trumps5 points

Solo with Hearts as trumps6 points

Wenz10 points

ToutDouble the value of the chosen game mode

Sie240 points

The game value can also be increased by certain factors, such as:

  • Schneider: If the losing team has less than 30 points, the game value is increased by 1 point.

  • Schwarz: If the losing team has no points at all, the game value is increased by 2 points.

  • Laufende: If one team has a sequence of consecutive trumps from the highest rank, the game value is increased by 1 point for each trump in the sequence. For example, if one team has the Jack of Acorns, the Jack of Leaves, and the Jack of Hearts, the game value is increased by 3 points.

  • Kontra and Re: If one team thinks that the other team will lose, they can say Kontra before the first card is played to double the game value. The other team can reply with Re to double it again. These are optional and can be agreed upon before the game.

The Bidding Process and the Game Value

Before the game starts, the players must decide who will be the declarer and what game mode will be played. This is done by a bidding process, where each player can either pass or bid a game mode with a certain value. The bidding starts with the player to the left of the dealer and goes clockwise. The player who bids the highest value becomes the declarer and chooses the game mode. If all players pass, the dealer must declare a Rufspiel (Call Game).

The bidding process follows these rules:

  • A player can only bid a game mode that he or she can actually play with his or her cards. For example, a player cannot bid a Solo with Hearts as trumps if he or she does not have any Hearts in his or her hand.

  • A player can only bid a game mode that has a higher value than the previous bid. For example, a player cannot bid a Rufspiel (Call Game) after another player has bid a Solo with Acorns as trumps.

  • A player can only bid once. Once a player has passed or made a bid, he or she cannot change it later.

  • The bidding ends when three players have passed in a row. The last player who made a bid becomes the declarer and chooses the game mode.

If all players pass, the dealer must declare a Rufspiel (Call Game) and choose a trump s
